Sue Bird Biography

Sue Bird, named Suzanne Brigit Bird, was born in Long Island in 1980 and grew up to be a professional women’s basketball player. Her earliest memory of basketball was a childhood trip to see the Chicago Bulls, in which Sue remembers watching Michael Jordan slam dunk – and that’s about the extent of it. Sue played a variety of sports throughout her childhood, but came to be named the New York State Player of the Year, New York Daily News Player of the Year, and a WBCA All-American her senior year of high school. Sue attended the University of Connecticut, in which she finished her career at UConn ranking first in three-point percentage and free throw percentage. As the top point guard in the nation, she led her team to an unbelievable 114-4 record throughout her college career. It’s no wonder the Seattle Storm selected Bird as the first overall pick of the 2002 WNBA Draft. Sue currently still plays for the Storm, in addition to the UMMC Ekaterinburg. To date with her time in the WNBA, Bird has been a seven-time WNBA All-Star, one of nine women to win an Olympic Gold Medal, and was voted as one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All Time. At age 34, we are all dreading the day Sue Bird has to call it quits on the game of basketball.
