About Oliver Purnell
Oliver Purnell is a college basketball coach who is currently the head coach at DePaul University. Purnell attended Old Dominion University where he had a successful playing career in the three years he played. He helped the Monarchs reach the 1975 NCAA Division II national championship. Purnell was selected as an honorable mention Division II All-American by Converse in 1975. Purnell was inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in April 1988. The Milwaukee Bucks selected Purnell in the sixth round of the 1975 NBA Draft, but he did not sign. In July 1975, Purnell became a graduate assistant coach at Old Dominion before becoming the assistant coach in 1977. As an assistant coach, Purnell helped the Monarchs reach the postseason seven times. Purnell was hired as Maryland’s assistant coach in 1985 where he remained until 1988. Purnell was selected as Radford’s head coach in 1988. He also served as the head coach for Old Dominion, Dayton, Clemson, and DePaul. During his time as a coach, he has won three Coach of the Year awards.
