About Alvin Gentry
Alvin Gentry is a long-time basketball coach and the current Vice President of Basketball Engagement for the Sacramento Kings. Gentry has previously been the head coach of the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns, New Orleans Pelicans, and the Kings. He has guided three of those franchises to the playoffs, including the 2009-10 Suns team that advanced to the Western Conference Finals.
The Miami Heat gave him his first crack as an interim head coach at the end of the 1994-95 season. Gentry started his coaching career as an assistant in college, taking jobs at Baylor and Colorado before winning a national championship on Larry Brown’s staff at Kansas in 1988. In addition to Brown, Gentry has coached under greats such as Gregg Popovich and Doc Rivers.
The Shelby, North Carolina native played college basketball at Appalachian State University. His first cousin is former NC State and NBA star David Thompson.
