About Avery Johnson
Avery Johnson was a respected NBA point guard and head coach. The “Little General” played for six different teams, but he is best remembered for his time with the San Antonio Spurs. Johnson hit the game winning shot in Game 5 of the 1999 NBA Finals and the Spurs won their first title. During his 16-year career, he had three separate stints with the franchise. The Spurs retired his #6 jersey and he is a member of the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame. Johnson immediately went into coaching following his playing career and spent one season as an assistant for the Dallas Mavericks before being named head coach. He took the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2006 and the team posted four straight 50 plus wins seasons under him. Johnson is the fastest coach to reach 150 wins in NBA history. He also coached the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets for three seasons and the Alabama Crimson Tide for four seasons.
