About Leo Cardenas
Leo Cardenas is one of the greatest players in the storied history of the Cincinnati Reds. Cardenas was born in Matanzas, Cuba and came to the U.S. to pursue a career in Major League Baseball. He signed with the Reds in 1957 and made his major league debut three years later. Cardenas played the first nine seasons of his career in Cincinnati and became one of the best defensive shortstops in baseball. He made four of his five All-Star teams while playing with the Reds and was also awarded a Gold Glove in 1965. On three occasions, Cardenas led his league in fielding percentage. In 1965 and 1966, he paced the National League in intentional walks. Cardenas also spent time with the Minnesota Twins, California Angels, Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers before retiring in 1975. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1981.
