Andy Van Slyke

There is no denying Andy Van Slyke as a baseball lifer. Van Slyke had a 13 year playing career and longtime coaching tenur in Major League Baseball. He is a three-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner. Always flashing his versatility in the field, Van Slyke was a corner infielder and played all three outfield positions. His arm strength was a plus and he was regularly among the league leaders in outfield assists as the center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Van Slyke first became a notable big leaguer with the Whitey Herzog led St. Louis Cardinals and the team won the National League in his third big league season. Prior to joining the Mariners coaching staff, he was the first base coach under Jim Leyland with the Detroit Tigers from 2006-2009. He has co-authored two baseball books and for a time was a sports talk radio host in St. Louis. Van Slyke’s son Scott plays in the Los Angeles Dodgers organizations, while son Jared played college football and his third son A.J. played college baseball.
