About Al Oliver
Al Oliver was a seven-time All-Star who hit .303 and collected 2,743 hits over his 18-year career. Oliver debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1968, won five division titles with the club, and was in center field when the franchise won the 1971 World Series. From 1976-84, Oliver hit over .300 each season. He won three consecutive Silver Slugger Awards from 1980-82 for the Texas Rangers and Montreal Expos. With the Expos in 1982, Oliver won the National League batting and RBI titles. Oliver is a native of Portsmouth, Ohio and was officially designated as “Mr. Ambassador” for the city in 2013. To have a legendary baseball career, he had to overcome the loss of his mother at age 11 and his father on the day he was called up to the Pirates. Oliver’s son, Aaron, started three years at Texas A&M and caught the first touchdown in Big 12 Conference history.
