About Billy Williams
As a former MLB left fielder, Billy Williams paved the way for those that followed him. Billy had ever experienced overt racial discrimination until he made it to the minor leagues and it almost caused him to quit the game. Williams was convinced to come back, and he proved his worth on the field. Billy quickly made his way up the minor league ranks and made it to the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs where he was awarded the Rookie of the Year Award in 1961. His 2,711 career hits, 426 home runs, and 1,475 runs batted in propelled Williams to becoming a six time All-Star as well as the NL batting champion in 1972. Those stats also earned Billy a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame when he got more than 85% of the vote in 1987 as well as having his number 26 retired by the Cubs in the same year.
