About Lee Smith
Lee Smith pitched in the major leagues for 18 years with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, California Angels, Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles from 1980 to 1997. During that time he was one of the most dominant relief pitchers in the game, compiling 478 saves and a 3.03 ERA with 1,251 strikeouts in 1,289.1 innings pitched and 1,022 appearances. He got his start in professional baseball at the age of 18 as a second round draft selection of the Chicago Cubs out of Northwestern State University of Louisiana. During his first big league season he appeared in 18 games and posted two wins with a 2.91 ERA, foreshadowing the unbelievable career he had in front of him. His best season came in 1991, when he posted a 2.34 ERA and led the league with 47 saves in route to earning All-Star honors and finishing second in the Cy Young voting. The following year he led the league with 43 saves and finished fourth in the Cy Young voting. Lee was a seven-time All-Star and three time Rolaids Relief Man of the Year Award winner. Since his retirement he has pursued a successful coaching career, serving as a minor league pitching instructor in the Giants organization and also serving as the pitching coach for the South Africa national team in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
