Fred McGriff Biography

Fred McGriff is a retired MLB first baseman who played 19 seasons in the league with six different teams. Originally drafted in the ninth round of the 1981 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees, McGriff made his much anticipated MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1986, playing with the team for five seasons. In 1988, McGriff hit 34 homeruns, his first of seven straight 30+ homerun seasons, and he emerged as one of the top power hitters in the league. Following the 1990 season, McGriff was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he would go on to earn his first of five All Star nods in 1992. McGriff was then traded to the Atlanta Braves midway through the 1993 season, playing with the team for five seasons and winning a World Series along with three more All Star nominations. After short stints with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Cubs, the Dodgers, and another with the Rays, McGriff opted to retire in 2004, finishing his career with 493 homeruns and 1,550 RBIs.
