About Gary Fisher
Gary Fisher is one of the inventors of the modern mountain bike. At 12 years old, Fisher began competing in road and track races. He was suspended from racing in 1968 because the race organizers cited a rule that stated his hair was too long. In 1975, Fisher went to work on his 1930s Schwinn Excelsior X bicycle. The changes Fisher made to his bike included drum brakes, motorcycle brake levers and cables, and triple chainrings. In 1979, Fisher and Kelly founded MountainBikes, the first company to specialize in the making of these bikes. The first model of mountain bikes sold for $1300 and 160 were made in their first year. Fisher was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1988. He has been recognized in multiple magazines for his innovations in sports, for leaving his mark, and he was named as the Founding Father of Mountain Bikes. Fisher is still involved with the design and marketing of the bikes.
