Greg LeMond

Two-time World Champion and three-time Tour de France champion, Greg LeMond is a professional cycling hero.  A native of Lakewood, California, LeMond was the first non-European cyclist to win the Tour de France, accomplishing that feat in 1986.  In 1989 he returned to the tour after recovering from several gunshot wounds and captured a second title, following that up with another win in 1990.  Among the other firsts in LeMond's career include being the first to win the Road World Championship and the first pro cyclist to sign a million-dollar sponsorship contract.  In 1989 he was named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated and became the first cyclist to appear on their cover.  In 1996 , two years after his retirement he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame.

LeMond's contributions to the sport go far and beyond the track and his accomplishments on it.  During his career he was at the forefront of innovation in the sport of cycling, championing technological advancements like carbon fiber bicycle frames and aerodynamic handlebars that were later marketed as LeMond Bicycles.
