About Russ Smith
Russ Smith was only a 3 star recruit coming out of high school, not drawing a lot of big time look from the major programs. Louisville, who had initially overlooked Smith, saw him in a game while scouting one of his opponents and they knew the 60 guard would fit right in to their system. In his first season at Louisville, Smith suffered from several injuries and a lack of playing time that almost led to him from leaving Louisville. He found reason to stay however and it was a good thing he did, finding significant playing time as a sophomore when he broke the school record for steals in a season (87) to help lead the Cardinals to the Final Four. Smith returned for a standout senior year where he led the Cardinals to win the Big East and NCAA Championships, being named Midwest Regionals Most outstanding Player in the process. Smith had an All-American season as a senior and in June was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers who went on to trade him to the New Orleans Pelicans.
