About Mark Turgeon
Mark Turgeon, a college basketball coach currently coaching the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is fulfilling his dream each and every day impacting others through the sport of basketball. Turgeon was born in Kansas in 1965 and attended the University of Kansas ultimately to become a coach. He graduated with a degree in Personal Administration in 1987, after playing point guard for the Kansas Jayhawks for all four of his college years. Turgeon received his first coaching job at his alma mater the very same year he graduated, where he served as an assistant for five years. He then went on to serve as an assistant coach at Oregon for five years and for the Philadelphia 76ers for two. In 1998, Turgeon accepted his first head coaching position at Jacksonville State in Alabama, where he led the team to a third place conference finish his second year. Since, he has coached for Wichita State and the Texas A&M Aggies. Turgeon has been the men’s head basketball coach at the University of Maryland since 2011 and has an overall head coaching record of 311-202. His dedication and hard work as a coach was especially recognized in 2006 when he received the MVC Coach of the Year Award.
