About Mario Gutierrez
Mario Gutierrez rode to fame in 2012 aboard the horse I’ll Have Another. Gutierrez won the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby, and Preakness Stakes. His win at the Derby was also the debut at the historic race for the 25 year old. Just two other jockeys had won their first race at Churchill Downs in the last 25 years. Gutierrez’s underdog story became big national news and led to many television appearances. Unfortunately for the jockey and the horse, I’ll Have Another missed out on a shot at the Triple Crown when he was scratched with tendinitis just a day before the Belmont Stakes. At age 14, Gutierrez started riding horses in Mexico. In 2006, he came to Canada and won two riding titles at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver. His father was also a jockey in Mexico.
