About Julie Krone
Julie Krone became the first female horse jockey to win a Triple Crown race in 1993 when she captured the Belmont Stakes on the back of Colonial Affair. She got her start in racing after a successful junior and amateur-riding career in Western Michigan. She made her debut as a jockey in 1981 and won her first career race at Tampa Bay Downs in February of that year. Over the next two decades she became one of the most prominent jockey’s in the business, and one of the most popular personalities in all of sports. From 1987 to 2003 she won over 40 races, and earned several prestigious awards, including the Big Sport of Turfdom Award in 1988, the Best U.S. Female Athlete ESPY Award in 1994 and the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award in 2004. She has since been inducted into the United States Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1999, Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in 2000, Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013.
