About Laffit Pincay
Laffit Pincay Jr. was flat racing’s all-time winningest jockey at the time of his retirement. Pincay learned how to ride by watching his father, who was also a jockey, at many tracks in Panama and Venezuela. Pincay began his career in Panama and in 1996, Fred W. Hooper and Camilo Marin sponsored him to come to the United States and ride under contract. Pincay’s American career began in Arlington Park in Chicago where he won eight of his first eleven races. In 1970, Pincay was voted the prestigious George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. Pincay was voted the Mike Venezia Memorial Award in 1996. In 1973, Pincay rode Sham and the two of them won that year’s Santa Anita Derby and placed second in the Wood Memorial. Pincay and Sham were the second choice in the Kentucky Derby and they placed second to Secretariat. Pincay and Swale won the 1984 Kentucky Derby and 1984 Belmont Stakes. During his time as a jockey, Pincay has collected 9.530 career wins.
