About Larry Murphy
Larry Murphy is a former Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman who currently serves as a studio analyst on NHL Network. Murphy had an excellent junior career with the Peterborough Petes and he represented Canada at the 1980 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The Los Angeles Kings drafted Murphy 4th overall in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. As a rookie during the 1980-81 NHL season, he set NHL records for most assists and points by a rookie defenseman. In the early 1983-84 season, Murphy was traded to the Washington Capitals. Over 21 seasons in the NHL, Murphy also played for the Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Detroit Red Wings. He was on four Stanley Cup winning teams during the 1990s and the only NHL player to accomplish this feat. Murphy retired after the 200-01 NHL season. After retiring from the ice, Murphy became a televisionanalyst for the Red Wings and served in that role until 2013.
