Charlie Joiner

Following a college career at storied Grambling State University, Charlie Joiner entered professional football as a defensive back for the AFL’s Houston Oilers in 1969. As a rookie, Joiner converted to wide receiver where he went on to spend the rest of his career. After a short stint with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he set a franchise record for receiving yards in a game (200), Joiner was traded to the San Diego Chargers where he spent the remaining 10 seasons of his career. Joiner was one of the smartest players to play the position, retiring with 750 receptions for 12,146 yards with 65 TDs. At the age of 39, Joiner retired as the oldest WR in NFL history and set the records for receptions, yards, and games played (all of which have since been surpassed). Following his playing career, Joiner began a coaching career in the NFL, most recently with his former team as the receiver’s coach. In 1996 he was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and in 1999 was listed in the final slot in The Sporting News’ Top 100 NFL Players of All-Time.
