About Lem Barney
Lem Barney played his college football at Jackson State University after graduating from Gulfport High School in Mississippi. While playing at Jackson State he recorded 26 career interceptions as a cornerback and earned All-Southwestern Conference honors in three consecutive years from 1964 to 1966. In 1967 he was selected in the second round by the Detroit Lions and would go on to play all 10 of his NFL seasons in Detroit. During his first year with the team he earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, and established himself as one of the top defensive backs in the league. Over the next ten seasons he earned Pro Bowl and NFL All-Pro honors seven times and earned a spot on the NFL 1960’s All-Decade Team. Barney retired in 1977 with 56 career interceptions, 1,077 interception return yards and seven returns for a touchdown. In 1992 he took his rightful place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame among the best players to ever play the game.
