Ken Niumatalolo Biography

Ken Niumatalolo is the current head coach at San Jose State. He had a tremendous run of success as the head coach at Navy from 2007-22, racking up a program-record 109 wins. Niumatalolo was a three-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and won three AAC West Division titles. The Midshipmen made 11 bowl games under his watch and had two top-25 finishes. 

Niumatalolo originally took over the program for the departing Paul Johnson during bowl game preparations in 2007. He rose to prominence as Johnson’s offensive coordinator and also spent four seasons in Annapolis in the mid-1990s coaching different position groups. Niumatalolo’s relationship with Johnson dates back to his time as a quarterback at Hawaii where the coach was his offensive coordinator. Johnson also gave him his first job in coaching as a graduate assistant with the Rainbows. Niumatalolo led Hawaii to the first bowl game in program history. His status as the second person of Polynesian descent and the first Samoan head coach in college football led to his 2014 induction into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame.
