J.T. Brown Biography

J.T. Brown is a former NHL player who enjoyed a long career with several clubs, including the Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, and Minnesota Wild. Hailing from Burnsville, Minnesota, he was a standout for the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he helped win the 2011 NCAA championship and was named the Frozen Four's Most Outstanding Player. His NHL career consisted of 365 games, during which he scored 13 goals and 36 assists. 

In 2017, he made headlines by raising his fist during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, a bold move in the NHL, a league with only about 5% black athletes. He was inspired by Colin Kaepernick's kneeling, aiming to draw attention against police brutality, racial injustice, and inequality in the U.S., especially after the acquittal of the Minnesota police officer who killed Philando Castile in 2016. In 2022, he joined the first all-Black TV broadcast of an NHL game with the Seattle Kraken, where he now serves as a TV analyst. His actions marked a significant moment for the league, which was a predominantly white league with limited engagement on social issues.
