About Barry Trotz
Barry Trotz is a legendary head coach and ranks third in NHL history in wins. Trotz is best known as the Nashville Predators first-ever head coach, a position stayed in for 15 seasons. He built the franchise from the ground up and took Nashville to the playoffs seven times.
In their inaugural 1998-99 season, the Preds won 28 games, which was the third-highest total ever for an expansion team. During his final season in Nashville, Trotz was the longest-tenured coach in the NHL and the second-longest-tenured coach in North American professional sports.
Trotz also was the head coach of the Washington Capitals for four seasons and led them to a Stanley Cup championship in 2018. After that triumph, he took over the New York Islanders, guiding them to three straight playoff berths, including an Eastern Conference Finals trip in 2020.
Trotz began his coaching career with the University of Manitoba and his hometown Dauphin Kings. Later, he would be a great success as head coach of the Capitals minor league team, the Portland Pirates. Trotz took the Pirates to two Calder Cup Finals, winning one. He forged his coaching career based on his experiences as a junior hockey player. Trotz is in both the University of Manitoba and Portland Pirates Hall of Fame.
