About J.J. Spaun
J. J. Spaun currently plays golf professionally on the PGA Tour while holding the title of 2025 U.S. Open champion. The San Diego State University collegiate golfer received Mountain West Player of the Year and All-American awards before turning professional in 2012.
The early stages of his career led Spaun to win the Staal Foundation Open on PGA Tour Canada while he topped the Order of Merit before he moved to the Korn Ferry Tour. His first PGA Tour victory at the 2022 Valero Texas Open came after 147 tour starts which earned him his first Masters tournament appearance where he finished T23.
In June 2025 Spaun achieved his career peak by winning the U.S. Open at Oakmont. He started poorly at the tournament but produced an unforgettable 64-foot birdie on the final hole to become the only player who finished under par. The victory remains one of golf's most memorable upsets.
After doctors misdiagnosed him with type 2 diabetes in 2021 Spaun received the correct diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and he now dedicates his time to diabetes research through his $10,000 JDRF donation.
Spaun stands at 5'9″ and weighs 185 lb as he demonstrates his determination and grit which helped him transition from almost quitting golf to winning at Oakmont. Spaun shares his life with his wife Melody and their two daughters Emerson and Violet. The family moved to Scottsdale Arizona in 2016 where they currently live.
Spaun celebrates his dual heritage of Filipino and Mexican descent while competing at a high level and pursuing his passion for life through his love of Disneyland and casual guitar playing.
J. J. Spaun transformed from a California walk-on golfer into a U.S. Open champion through his journey of perseverance and family support and his ability to seize the present moment after facing adversity.
