About Glen Sather
Glen Sather played 10 seasons in the NHL for six different teams before resigning as a player with the Edmonton Oilers in the World Hockey Assocition in 1977 to become their new head coach. Although he had a stellar career on the ice, his true talent was as a coach. As the coach of the Oilers he led them to unprecedented success in his first two seasons and led the way as they merged with the NHL in 1979. The following year the Oilers had a successful first season and Sather took over as both General Manager and Head Coach. What followed was a dynasty. From 1983 to 1990 he led the Oilers to four Stanley Cup victories while coaching future Hall of Fame legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier. As a coach, Sather was highly respected for his style and demeanor. He demanded respect around the league by what he had accomplished, and was honored for his career in 1997 with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
