About Gary Bettman
Gary Bettman has been NHL Commissioner since 1993. Bettman has guided the league to record franchise values while adding an additional six teams to their footprint. He has also had to persevere through three labor stoppages. Bettman has also achieved smaller successes, such as establishing the NHL’s marquee regular season event, The Winter Classic. Despite the various problems he has encountered, the NHL remains strong and has a devoted fanbase. In 2014, SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily named Bettman “Sports Executive of the Year”. The NHL was also named “Sports League of the Year” and the Winter Classic was honored as “Event of the Year’. Bettman originally came to hockey via the NBA, where he had risen to senior vice president and general counsel. He was with the NBA for over a decade. Bettman is a Queens, New York native who graduated from Cornell and New York University School of Law. Prior to joining the NBA, he worked for Proskauer, Rose, Goetz, & Mendelsohn.
