About Billy Smith
Billy Smith is a retired professional hockey goaltender. Smith was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1970 NHL Draft. Just two seasons later he was drafted to the New York Islanders as part of the 1972 Expansion Draft, and was a part of the Islanders first playoff appearance in 1974-75, his first year as a starter for the team. The Hockey Hall of Fame member played in the 1978 All-Star game and was named MVP. The playoffs of 1980 were the start of Smiths rise as an elite goaltender when he led the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup championships. Billy is also famous for something that had never before been done in the NHL. He was credited with scoring a goal in 1979 when a series of moves left Smith as the last Islander to touch the puck before it went into the net. Since retiring in 1989, Smith has been a goaltending coach and his number 31 has been retired by the Islanders.
