Dave Bing

Dave Bing played 12 seasons in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons, Washington Bullets and Boston Celtics. During that span he averaged over 20 points and six assists per game in route to earning seven All-Star selections, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1967 and the NBA MVP Award in 1976. After his retirement in 1978 he was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, had his legendary No. 21 jersey retired by the Detroit Pistons and was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of all-time. In 2008 Bing won a seat as the 74th Mayor of Detroit. During his four years in office he worked to improve the cities infrastructure, education, and public works projects. He had maintained his promise to the city to do his best to make it a better place. In 2013 he decided to not run for re-election, however he did launch a new program called BINGO, Boys Inspired through Nurturing Growth and Opportunities. The program's mission is to match up young men with mentors to help them navigate the sometimes-harsh world that they deal with on a daily basis, ultimately helping them make the choices that will put them on a path to success. In 2009, Bing received the National Civil Rights Museum Sports Legacy Award, for his contributions to civil and human rights.
