About Chuck Wepner
Chuck Wepner was a hard-nosed United States Marine Corp veteran who went on to have a successful career as a professional boxer. After leaving the Corps, Wepner worked as a bouncer while he began his professional boxing career in 1964. After becoming the New Jersey State Heavyweight Champion, Wepner moved on to more national fights and began putting up impressive wins. After losing 4 straight fights by knockout, many counted Wepner out until he went on a streak where he won 9 out of his next 11 bouts. In 1975, it was announced that Wepner would get a shot to take the Heavyweight title in a bout against legendary Muhammad Ali. Taking Ali all 15 rounds, Wepner earned a lot of respect in a technical knockout effort against arguably the greatest boxer of all time. Although never confirmed, many believe it was the Wepner-Ali bout that inspired Sylvester Stallone to create the movie Rocky. After a 14-year career, Wepner tallied a 35-14 record with 17 KOs.
