About Wimp Sanderson
Winfrey “Wimp” Sanderson was a longtime college basketball coach at the University of Alabama and Arkansas-Little Rock. Sanderson was National Coach of the Year in 1987 and SEC Coach of the Year three times. He is widely considered the greatest basketball coach in Crimson Tide history, taking the school to ten NCAA tournaments in 12 seasons. Under his watch, they won five SEC tournaments and advanced as far as the Sweet 16 in the NCAAs six times. Sanderson had 11 players in his time as head coach make it to the NBA, including notable stars Robert Horry and Latrell Sprewell. His plaid sports jackets at games were nearly as memorable as Bear Bryant’s houndstooth hat at Alabama. The Coleman Coliseum was unofficially known as the “Plaid Palace” during his coaching run. When you add in his season as a grad assistant and 20 seasons as an assistant, Sanderson roamed the sidelines for the Crimson Tide for 32 years. He also finished up his coaching career with five seasons at Arkansas-Little Rock, tying for the Sun Belt Championship once.
