Whitey Herzog Biography

Whitey Herzog is a legendary St. Louis Cardinals manager and Baseball Hall of Famer. At the helm of the Redbirds for a decade in the 80s, Herzog took his team to three World Series and won a championship in 1982. His “Whiteyball” teams were known for their speed on the basepaths and the pressure it put on opposing pitching staffs. The Cardinals retired his #24 jersey and he was elected to the team’s Hall of Fame in 2014. For two seasons, Herzog also served as team general manager laying the groundwork for the franchise’s dynastic run. He also managed the Texas Rangers, California Angels, and Kansas City Royals. Prior to his managerial roles, Herzog was a scout, director of player development, and coach for various teams. He played 634 big league games with marginal success. His playing career and in particular spring trainings with the Yankees and Casey Stengel greatly influenced his future success running a ballclub.
