About Spencer Haywood
Spencer Haywood is a former professional power forward/ center who played in the ABA, NBA and internationally. Haywood attended Pershing High School were he led the school’s basketball team to the state championship in 1967. During his collegiate years, Haywood first attended Trinidad State Junior College. Due to his performance and talent, Haywood made the Olympic Basketball team in 1968. During the 1968 Olympics, Haywood was the leading scorer on the team and he helped the team bring home the gold medal. He then attended the University of Detroit where he decided to go pro after his sophomore year, but due to NBA guidelines, he joined the Denver Rockets of the ABA. While playing for the Rockets, Haywood was named the ABA Most Valuable Player, an ABA All-Star, the ABA All-Star Game MVP, ABA Rookie of the Year, and he was named to the ABA All-Time Team. In 1970, Haywood joined the Seattle SuperSonics. He also played for the New York Knicks, New Orleans Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, Reyer Venezia, and the Washington Bullets.
