Sharon Wood Biography

Sharon Wood is a Canadian native and was one of the first North American women to reach the summit of Mount Everest. When she was twelve years old the mountaineering world captivated her and in 1977 she joined the all-woman expedition team to Mount Logan. In 1983 she summited Mount McKinley and followed that up with expeditions to Makula in 1984, Anconcagua in 1985 and Huascaran Sur in 1986. In 1986 she took on one of the most difficult climbs in the world when she headed up the west ridge to the north face of Mount Everest. After summiting Everest she began traveling the country speaking at community and corporate events, spreading the message that you can do anything when you put your mind to it. In 1997 she was awarded the Summit of Excellence Award at the Banff Mountain Film Festival and has since founded a private school for girls in her home country of Canada.
