About Shamila Kohestani
Shamila Kohestani is the captain and founder of the Afghan National Soccer Team and played her collegiate soccer at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Kohestani’s route to the United States of America was a tough one, with her having to endure several years under Taliban rule in Afghanistan prior to making her way to the land of the free. After establishing the Afghan National Soccer Team she was honored with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2006 ESPY Awards. While at Drew University she established the Afghan Girls Financial Assistance Program and took full advantage of her educational opportunities by working her way onto the Dean’s list. Since earning her degree from Drew in 2012 she has used her experiences to inspire thousands of young students and educate them on the issues in Afghanistan. Kohestani is one of the revolutionary figures in the struggle to advance women rights in the middle east and Afghanistan.
