About Rod Strickland
Rod Strickland is a basketball lifer and he has been successful as a player, coach and executive. Strickland first became a star in college at DePaul, where he led the Blue Demons to back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances. The New York Knicks selected Strickland in the first round of the 1988 NBA Draft and he was named to the All-Rookie Second Team. He broke out to become one of the league's top passers with the San Antonio Spurs. Strickland went on to sign with the Portland Trail Blazers in 1992 and averaged over 17 points and eight assists in four seasons. He would have even more amazing accomplishments with the Washington Wizards, leading the league in assists and being named to the All-NBA Second-Team in 1998. After five years in Washington, he would play for several more teams before retiring in 2005.
Strickland started his coaching career as the director of basketball operations at the University of Memphis and then moved on to an administrative role at the University of Kentucky. He also became an assistant coach at the University of South Florida and currently serves as the head of the NBA G League's professional path. Strickland is a member of the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame and is the godfather of current NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving.
