About Rick Mears
Rick Mears is a retired race car driver. The leader of the Mears Gang is one of only three drivers to win the historic and prestigious Indianapolis 500 four times and also holds the record for the most pole positions in the events history with 6. Rick began his driving career in off road racing in Bakersfield, California where he was raised. In the late 1970s Rick made the transition to Indy Car where he quickly became a star and attracted the attention of legendary owner Roger Penske when Rick became the first rookie to qualify on the front row of the Indy 500 at over 200 miles per hour. In his first full season he became the champion in 1979 and followed that up with two more titles in 1981 and 1982. After battling injury in the 1992 season, Rick decided it was time to retire from racing at the age of 41. Since then, Rick has worked as a consultant for Team Penske in the IRL.
