About Patrick Roy
Patrick Roy is arguably the greatest goaltender in NHL history and a current head coach with the New York Islanders. Roy split his playing career with the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche, winning the Stanley Cup twice with each franchise.
With Roy's noted postseason success, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy three times and did it in three different decades. He was also a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and an 11-time NHL All-Star. Roy's jersey is retired by both the Canadiens and Avalanche and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
Roystarted his professional career with the Sherbrooke Canadians of the American Hockey League and wasselected in the third round of the 1984 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadians. He would make hisprofessional debut in 1985, replacing the starting goalie in the third period. In 1986, Roy would becomea regular in the goal for Montreal, starting 47 games in the regular season and winning the starting jobfor the playoffs, where the Canadians would go on to win the Stanley Cup.
Roy alsowon the Cup again with theCanadians in 1993 but was traded to the Colorado Avalanche during the 1995season. Roy would help the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup that same season and stayed with the teamuntil his retirement in 2003.
After retirement, Roy made a successful transition into coaching with the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. He led the Avalanche from 2013-16, making the playoffs once and also went back to the postseason in 2024 during his first season with the Islanders.
