About Olaf Kolzig
Olaf Kolzig is a retired professional ice hockey goaltender who currently serves as the goaltender coach and player development coach for the Washington Capitals. The Washington Capitals selected Kolzig as the 19th overall pick in the 1989 Draft. Kolzig spent several years in the American Hockey League, ECHL, and Western Hockey League before playing a game in the National Hockey League. Kolzig played in his first NHL game during the 1989-90 season only to be sent back to the minors for a few years. The Capitals brought Kolzig up to be a backup during the1995-96 season and he remained with the Capitals as a backup during the 1996-97 season. During the 1997-98 season, Kolzig helped lead the Capitals to the Stanley Cup, where they were swept by Detroit. Kolzig was the starting goalie for the German Olympic team in the 1998 Winter Olympics. He announced his retirement from the NHL on September 23, 2009 and he was named to the ECHL Hall of Fame. In 2010, Kolzig was inducted into the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010.
