About Micky Ward
Micky Ward, known as “Irish Micky Ward”, is a retired WBU welterweight champion from Lowell, Massachusetts. Ward’s life as a fighter was chronicled in the hit blockbuster movie, “The Fighter”. He got his start in fighting as a pro in 1985 after a stellar amateur career in which he won three New England Golden Gloves championships. In 1996 he won the WBU Intercontinental Light Welterweight title and successfully defended his title later that year. He’d go on to capture the WBU Light Heavyweight title in 2000 and be named the 2001 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year after his winning bout against another top welterweight contender. He’d follow that up by winning Fight of the Year in 2002 and 2003 in fights against Arturo Gatti. Since retiring from boxing with a 38-13 overall record in 2003 he has opened a boxing gym and outdoor hockey rink in his hometown of Lowell.
