About Marlen Esparza
Marlen Esparza is an American boxer born in Houston, Texas in 1989. She became the youngest female fighter to win the National Championship, along with the first American female boxer to earn a position at the Olympics. Esparaza grew up in a family that adored the sport, while her father, a Mexican immigrant, introduced her and her three other siblings to it. While putting school on the back burner for most of her early childhood, Esparza’s family agreed to only let her take up the sport of boxing if she turned things around at school. Becoming the class president and a straight-A student in high school, Esparza went on to attend Rice University. She won her first Olympic medal in 2006, a bronze at the World Championships in New Delhi. Her following accomplishments included a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and a gold at the 2014 World Championships in Jeju. Esparza was voted the Houston Fighter Of The Year in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 and has been the subject of several documentaries as a remarkable example of someone whose intense commitment and self-discipline has resulted in continued success.
