About Claressa Shields
Breaking through gender barriers, Claressa Shields became the first female middleweight Olympic gold medalist at the 2012 Olympic games. At the age of 11, Shields was finally allowed to being boxing after wanting to do so for multiple years. Shields began her career by winnings two Junior Olympic championships and after winning the title at the National Police Athletic League Championships, she earned a spot at the Olympic trials. After a few rules changes for the first ever female boxing competition in Olympic history, Shields narrowly earned a spot at the 2012 Olympic games in London. After piling up some impressive wins, including one over three-time defending world champion Mary Spencer, Shields made it to the gold medal round where she defeated Russian Nadezda Torlopova. In 2016, she followed up by becoming the first American Olympian to win back-to-back gold medals in boxing. Following the Games, Shields went pro and became the unified super middleweight and middleweight world champion. She made an appearance on the final HBO Boxing card in 2018 and was named Female Fighter of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
