About Mateen Cleaves
Mateen Cleaves is one of the most legendary athletes in Michigan State history. Cleaves attended MSU and played on the Spartans basketball team from 1996-2000. While at Michigan State, Cleaves helped lead the Spartans to the 2000 National Championship and he was named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. In February 2007, Michigan State retired Cleaves’ number making him the 8th MSU player to have his number retired.
The Detroit Pistons selected Cleaves in the 1st pick as the 14th overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft. Throughout his professional playing career, Cleaves also played for the Sacramento Kings, Huntsville Flight, Cleveland Cavaliers, Seattle SuperSonics, Fayetteville Patriots, UNICS Kazan, Bakersfield Jam, and Panionios. In retirement, Cleaves has served as a studio analyst for the Pistons. He is currently a leadership coach for United Wholesale Mortgage.
