About Mary Carillo
Mary Carillo joined the professional tennis circuit in 1977 and rose to prominence later that year after capturing the 1977 French Open title in mixed doubles. That same year she made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in mixed doubles, the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in doubles competition, and competed in multiple grand slam tournaments, making her one of the most successful rookie’s in history. As a singles player she reached a career high No. 33 World Ranking in 1980, but was then forced to retire due to knee injuries. After her retirement she signed on as a sportscaster with the USA Network from 1980 to 1987 and also worked at PBS from 1981 to 1986. In 1988 she landed a job with ESPN and remained in that position for nine years. Since 1986 she has been a part of CBS Sports’ US Open coverage and has also worked the French Open and Wimbledon as a member of the NBC Sports team. Carillo is widely considered to be the best tennis analyst in the business, and has earned multiple honors including being named best commentator by Tennis Magazine from 1988 to 1991, best commentator by World Tennis magazine in 1986 and broadcaster of the Year by the Women’s Tennis Association in 1981 and 1985. In 2010 she was awarded the Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism, making her the first woman to ever receive that award.
