About Mark Gottfried
Mark Gottfried had a great deal of success across a lengthy career as a head coach in college basketball. Before his coaching career, Gottfried played one season at Oral Roberts and three seasons at Alabama. During his time at Alabama, Gottfried started 98 consecutive games and graduated with a degree in communications.
He was selected in the 1987 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons but chose to take a different path and move to California to attend graduate school instead. After attending graduate school at UCLA, Gottfried served as an assistant coach there for eight seasons. He also served as a head coach for three years (1995-1998) at Murray State before returning to his alma mater, Alabama.
Four years into his tenure guiding the Crimson Tide, he was named SEC Coach of the Year and led the team to the regular-season conference championship. That began a run of five straight NCAA Tournament berths.
Gottfried was subsequently named the head coach at North Carolina State and guided them to four straight appearances in March Madness from 2012-15, including two Sweet Sixteen berths. He also coached at Cal State Northridge.
