About Mark Coleman
Mark Coleman is a retired American mixed martial artist revered as a pioneer of the sport, adding elements from traditional wrestling into his fighting style repertoire. Nicknamed “The Hammer” and the “Grandfather of Ground & Pound,” he revolutionized MMA by dominating opponents with forceful takedowns and a barrage of relentless strikes.
Coleman began his athletic career at The Ohio State University, where he won the 1988 NCAA Division I National Championship. He claimed gold at the 1991 Pan American Games and competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, finishing seventh. Transitioning to MMA, Coleman debuted in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), winning the UFC 10 and 11 tournaments and becoming the first UFC Heavyweight Champion in 1997.
Coleman achieved a career pinnacle in Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships by winning the 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix, defeating four opponents in one night. He retired in 2013 and founded Team Hammer House, where he mentors young fighters.
Coleman’s sensational career wasn’t without its tradeoffs, with the athlete suffering a severe neck injury and several concussions. He battled with alcoholism for most of his life before becoming sober in 2018. He famously saved his parents from a house fire in March of 2024 in his native Ohio home.
Coleman's legacy is one of redemption and resilience. He strongly supports causes that raise funds for mental health initiatives and is a speaker on his resolve and newfound focus on fatherhood and life beyond the mat.
He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2008.
