About Mariel Zagunis
Mariel Zagunis is a two-time American Olympic gold medalist in fencing. She won gold in individual sabre at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Zagunis is just the second U.S. born competitor to win fencing gold and the first in 100 years. 2004 was also the first year that Women’s Sabre was on the Olympic schedule. Zagunis was seen as an underdog in both Olympic tournaments where she came out on top. In light of her historic achievements, she was chosen as the flag bearer for the American delegation during the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics in London. Zagunis can also boast four World Championship gold medals and 11 medals overall. Perhaps foreshadowing her destiny, her parents were both rowers who met at the 1976 Olympic Trials. The Beaverton, Oregon native started fencing at age ten. She is currently training in the attempt to make her fourth Olympics in 2016.
