Lyoto Machida Biography

Lyoto Machida is currently a one of the best middleweights in the UFC and a former light heavyweight champion.  Machida won the light heavyweight title with a second round knockout of Rashad Evans a UFC 98.  While he successfully defended his title once against Shogun Rua, Rua defeated him and took the belt in a rematch at UFC 113.  Prior to the fight, Machida was undefeated in MMA.  Four times in the UFC, he has been awarded Knockout of the Night and he has participated in Fight of the Night three times.  As a Japanese Brazilian, Machida has a very unique martial arts background.  His karate training began at age three, he was a black belt in karate by 13, and started learning jiu-jitsu at 16.  Machida also studied sumo and Muay Thai.  Twice he was the Brazilian Sumo Champion.  Machida’s father was a high-ranking head of Brazil’s branch of the Japan Karate Association.
