About Big John McCarthy
John McCarthy was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and was the first-ever referee in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. McCarthy got his start as a referee after a long and decorated career as a Los Angeles Police Officer. During that time he served as a Tactical Self-Defense Instructor at the Los Angeles Police Academy. During his career in mixed martial arts he has served as a referee in thousands of MMA bouts and also served as the head referee in the UFC for many years. In addition to those duties he has also ventured into broadcasting, providing commentary for the first ever event held by Affliction Clothing and Adrenaline MMA called Affliction: Banned, and has also contributed commentary and analysis for The Fight Network during their coverage of UFC events. Currently McCarthy serves as a referee in Bellator, and owns and operates C.O.M.M.A.N.D., which he founded as a training and certification school for MMA referees and judges.
