About B.J. Penn
B.J. Penn is one of the most legendary mixed martial artists of all-time. The former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight Champion, is just the second fighter to win titles in two weight classes. An eight-year title defense of his lightweight belt spanned nine years and is a record for the division. Penn was a noted pay-per-view star and helped popularize the UFC’s smaller weight classes. His UFC 101 fight against Kenny Florian set the PPV record for a lightweight main event fight with 850,000 buys. He finished with a career record of 16-10-2. His rivalry with UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes is considered one of the best in the organization’s history. Prior to his time with the UFC, Penn became a jiu-jitsu black belt in just three years. In 2000, he won a gold medal in the black belt division at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, becoming the first non-Brazilian to do so. The Hawaiian was also one of the first and most zealous advocates for drug testing in the UFC. His autobiography, Why I Fight: The Belt is Just an Accessory, made it on the New York Times’ bestseller list in 2010.
