Luis Tiant Biography

Luis Tiant won 229 games over 19 years in the major leagues.  Tiant was a three-time All-Star and is a member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame.  With the Red Sox, he would win over 20 games three times and gained the affectionate nickname “El Tiante” among the Fenway Park faithful.  The Sox would win all three games Tiant pitched in the 1975 World Series, but they still fell to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games.  He arrived on the scene with the Cleveland Indians in 1964 and made his presence known.  His first start was a four hit, 11 strikeout shutout win against the New York Yankees and ace Whitey Ford.  Tiant also played for the Minnesota Twins, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and California Angels.  A native of Marianao, Cuba, he left the island for professional baseball before the rise of Fidel Castro’s regime.  As a result, he would not see his parents again until they were given a special visa to attend the 1975 World Series.  His father was a star pitcher for the Negro League’s New York Cubans and Cienfuegos in the Cuban League.  Tiant works for the Red Sox as a pitching advisor.
